Three letters. Three letters that had been sitting in the Shannon post office for — she asked, because it seemed important — somewhere between eight months and three years. The postmistress, Mrs van Rooyen, was not certain of the exact dates. She was certain, however, that they had come from different places.

The first from Johannesburg. The second from somewhere in the Cape. The third — and this was the one that made Daphne's hands very still — from Wales. Addressed to ST Hughes. Never collected.
