ST Hughes was brilliant, stubborn and restless. He bred racehorses at Shannon in the Orange Free State. He created a herbal remedy called Black Forest Tea using three flowers from three continents. He was swindled in a court case — and fought back. And then he left for the Congo on a journey he described as necessary — and was never seen again.

He left behind a trail of clues. Whether deliberate or accidental — we still do not know. His daughter Daphne spent the best part of her 93 years following them. In her final months she gave the tins to DuGallan — her last wish that he carry on the journey of discovery.
